About Ibid: a life - a novel in footnotes

The book you were meant to read is missing.

When the only copy of his manuscript – a biography of Jonathan Blashette, three-legged circus performer, philanthropist and entrepreneur – is destroyed by a careless editor, writer Mark Dunn wearily accepts an offer to publish instead the only surviving text: the footnotes. Ibid is the result.

Hilarious, compelling and absolutely unique, it is the story of a life and times constructed entirely in the margins of a fictional lost book whose contents you, the reader, will have to imagine.

By the acclaimed author of Ella Minnow Pea, this is without doubt one of the most deliciously original and entertaining novels you will ever read.

‘Frequently reduced me to hysterics’

Scotland on Sunday

‘Terrific, if mental ... I have wordless admiration for the man’

‘Very much in the Woody Allen mould, Dunn possesses a dizzying comic aptitude’

The Times

‘Unbearably hilarious’

Los Angeles Times
